Crown Law is seeking a lawyer with keen interest and expertise in the role of tikanga in Aotearoa’s current legal system. You will be involved in the creation of a suite of advice and supporting information to the Government Legal Network. This is an exciting opportunity to work with lawyers across government and to support the Crown in a significant and evolving dimension of the law.

We are open to applications from lawyers at different levels of experience. The successful candidate will be appointed as Crown Counsel or Assistant Crown Counsel. This project may require more than one appointee. We will build a project team around the experience and skills of the successful candidate(s).

Based in the System Advice Team and working closely with Crown Law’s Treaty teams, you will be a part of the Solicitor-General’s leadership of the Government Legal Network. The GLN is a collaborative initiative to leverage the strength of legal knowledge and expertise across government. Led by the Solicitor-General with the support of all government lawyers, the GLN’s ambition is to ensure government has access to timely, focused legal services embedded in the government’s context and offering the best support.

The role requires you to lead or contribute to a project which is essential to the government legal services. Knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system and the Crown’s responsibilities as a Treaty partner are important for the role. You may also contribute to other work in the System Advice Team.

You will bring technical expertise in the law and demonstrated ability to deliver. You will be a self-starter with a collaborative working style. We are interested in applicants with practical problem-solving, analytical and people skills, and who come from a range of backgrounds. We are looking for someone with:

  • A law degree
  • Knowledge of and interest in te ao Māori and the role of tikanga in Aotearoa’s legal system
  • Knowledge of legal practice in government
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills
  • Strengths in engaging with stakeholders and building collaboration
