Build strong relationships as a trusted advisor in a commercially orientated, state-owned enterprise. Be part of enabling New Zealand's energy future!
At the centre of the electricity sector in New Zealand, Transpower's position as Grid Owner and System Operator is unique. A critical lifeline utility, we are working hard to enable accelerated electrification to help meet climate change and sustainability goals that will impact generations to come.
About the team
Transpower's Corporate Governance team supports and enables Transpower's strategic priorities though the provision of legal and regulatory services and advice, including oversight, delivery, and management of all legal advice and administration of the Transpower board, board committees and Transpower's subsidiaries.
About the opportunity
Transpower is a natural monopoly impacting the lives of all New Zealanders, so you'll work with a strategic lens to help enable New Zealand's energy future. You'll gain deep understanding of our regulators (the Electricity Authority and Commerce Commission), and other interested stakeholders, such as MBIE, electricity generators, and local electricity distribution networks. You will work with our team of experienced and supportive Corporate Counsels, and alongside our General Management team, to support Transpower's understanding and planning for the impacts of a rapidly growing and changing electricity industry.
You'll enjoy trust and autonomy to advise the business so business leaders can make timely, well-advised, commercially astute, and risk-based decisions that reflect the requirements of both the law and Transpower's business needs.
Working with internal customers, you will actively listen, learn, question, identify, and understand their requirements, driver's, and objectives while assessing when and where legal input and advice is required, and delivering commercially appropriate advice and documents to meet the needs of the business.
What will you bring?
We are looking for someone who would love to be part of a successful and collaborative team. You'll bring a flexible approach to how you provide advice and write documents, and a well-developed ability to ask questions to tease out what the business really wants and needs, in a role where no two days are the same.
You will have the confidence to build relationships across the business and at all levels.
To be shortlisted your CV and cover letter will demonstrate the following:
- An LLB and three or more years practical experience in a legal firm or in-house corporate legal team, actively involved in providing legal services. You will hold/be eligible for a practising certificate issued by the New Zealand Law Society
- Knowledge of and experience with New Zealand law, preferably for large (revenue $500M+) commercially orientated and/or regulated businesses
- Well-developed critical and systems thinking to distinguish business situations where legal advice is necessary or desirable and the best way to go about providing such advice
- Proven ability to clearly and succinctly explain and present complex legal issues, in writing and verbally
- Skill in document negotiation and drafting
