About the role

The Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai is seeking an experienced and strategic legal leader to take up the role of General Counsel. Providing trusted legal advice to the Chief Executive, Board, and Māori Advisory Group (Te Puna), you will lead the Authority’s legal and litigation functions, manage a small legal team, and oversee the delivery of high-quality legal services.

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, you will contribute to organisational leadership and strategic planning, influencing the future of water services regulation in Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai

The Water Services Authority - Taumata Arowai was established as a Crown entity in 2021. Its mission is to ensure safe drinking water every day for everyone. On behalf of consumers and the New Zealand public, it regulates drinking water suppliers and oversees the environmental performance of wastewater and stormwater networks.

The organisation is entering a new phase following enactment of Local Water Done Well legislative reforms. As General Counsel, you will play a lead role in operationalising new legislation, designing legal instruments, advising on organisational regulatory strategy and exercising new enforcement powers.

About you

To be successful in this role you will offer:

  •         A current New Zealand practising certificate and LLB.
  •          Experience providing legal advice in a regulatory environment, ideally within central or local government.
  •          Proven ability to lead a legal function and manage legal risk across a complex organisation.
  •          Strong understanding of public and administrative law, regulatory compliance, and enforcement.
  •          Strategic thinking and analytical skills, and ability to work with ambiguity.
  •          Experience managing people and fostering a high-performing, inclusive team culture.
