Legal Counsel (Part time or Full time)

We have a unique opportunity for a motivated and experienced Legal Counsel to join the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Legal and Commercial team.
Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role
This is a senior role with organisation-wide responsibilities and a mandate for assisting capability and understanding of legal issues across the Council, with a particular focus on regulatory compliance.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s complex regulatory frameworks provide the scope for using your specialist skills and developing new ones across a wide range of legal work. In this role you will be exposed to a range of areas of law relating to Regional Council’s various functions with a particular focus on regulatory enforcement and litigation under the Resource Management Act (or its replacement), as well as Biosecurity, Maritime and local government legislation.
Reporting to the Legal & Commercial Manager, you will provide in-house legal services and ensure that external legal services received by Council are managed effectively. You will be part of a team with a range of experience, including specialist resource management, commercial, and local government lawyers.

To be successful in this role you will have:
Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree or higher;
- Admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand; and
- A current practicing certificate.
Experience
- 8+ years post qualification experience, with a focus on litigation and environmental regulatory compliance;
- Experience with local government and/or in a prosecution role would be advantageous;
- Experience and interest in employment law and/or health and safety desirable;
- Excellent technical skills, drafting and negotiation experience.

The position will be located in Regional House, Tauranga (but will also service Councils’ Whakatāne and Rotorua offices). The recruitment salary range for this position will be approximately $120,000 to $140,000 and will be determined depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
