We play an important role within the organisation and the need for our support is growing – invitations are now open for another team member to join us and contribute to our contract and commercial portfolios.
As Senior Counsel, you will report to the General Counsel - whilst providing touch points throughout ECan – from our effective, strong and valued relationship with all Papatipu Rūnanga within the Canterbury rohe and Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, to working alongside our executive leadership and business unit managers – connections and building relationships will be key.
Your knowledge in creating contracts and commercial arrangements, aligning with our statutory requirements will be highly valued here.
We invite interest from people with the following skills and experience:
- A New Zealand barrister and solicitor with a current practising certificate (or who are eligible to hold one)
- 5 years’ experience in providing legal advice and support
- Understanding of the machinery of local government
- Proven experience of working in an environment that requires a high level of discretion, sensitivity and interpersonal interaction

Indicative Salary depending on experience and expertise: $95,000 to $110,000.
