Chorus is proud to be New Zealand’s largest telecommunications infrastructure company, building and managing one of the world’s best open access internet networks. We are passionate about keeping people connected and our ambition is to create the best-connected country in the world for both present and future generations.
The Senior Counsel - Regulation & Competition is part of a specialist team that delivers best in class legal services to Chorus and contributes to regulatory policy and implementation outcomes. The Regulation & Competition legal team sits in the wider, multi-disciplinary Corporate and Regulatory Legal Affairs (CaRLA) team which supports Chorus to deliver better broadband to New Zealanders.
Due to increasing workload, there is a need for an additional Senior Counsel to join this small, high functioning team. Reporting directly to the Assistant General Counsel Regulation & Competition (Auckland based), this role can sit in either Auckland or Wellington. The mix of work is complex, interesting and varied and among other duties, you will be required to:
- Support the development of compelling and creative legal positions in relation to the ongoing operation of Chorus’ new regulatory model for fibre services and its broader suite of regulatory obligations.
- Deliver professional, high quality legal advice and expertise to Chorus in support of regulatory programmes and projects, business, sales and marketing and strategic initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with key business partners and others in CaRLA providing confident and objective legal advice that reflects an understanding of business strategy.
- Synthesise regulatory and competition issues as input into broader advice to Chorus and be able to communicate the complexity of Chorus’ legal obligations in a way that facilitates business understanding to promote compliance.
- Collaborate seamlessly with multi-disciplinary teams to shape and create regulatory strategy and implementation outcomes.
- Be part of, and make a positive difference to, CaRLA and Chorus.
To be successful, not only must you possess excellent technical and legal skills, you need to be a real solutions finder with the ability to assist the business to successfully manage this complex regulatory landscape. You will possess at least nine years’ experience in regulatory and competition matters gained either from a leading law firm, a reputable in-house organisation or a government body/regulator. Legal experience in the telecommunication industry is desirable but not essential.
This is an exciting time to be working in this area of law at Chorus so if you want to be at the leading edge in your chosen area of expertise, then you cannot afford to miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
