Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

We have an opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel - Employment Relations to join the office of the Vice-Chancellor | Te Tari o te Tumu Whakarae. Your role is to act as a legal adviser to the University on general employment relations and health and safety matters including by supporting People & Culture staff and leaders across the organisation with employment relations advice and advocacy. You will be a key team member of the Legal Services team, reporting to the General Counsel/Registrar.

 

Mōu | Who You Are

The successful candidate will hold a LLB Bachelor's Degree, a current practicing certificate issued by the NZ Law Society and admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. In addition you will have:

  • 10 years legal experience in a similar environment
  • Extensive specialist (specifically employment law) legal knowledge and expertise at a senior level
  • A thorough and detailed understanding of the education sector and public decision-making processes, is desirable
  • Previous experience in providing advice in an in-house capacity, is desirable
  • Excellent at relationship building with the ability to find pragmatic solutions to variety of technical problems
  • Can manage competing priorities and a significant and diverse workload
  • Experience in providing culturally-responsive approaches to dispute resolution (for example, restorative justice, traditional and tikanga-based approaches), is desirable

 

Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With

The General Counsel/Registrar is responsible for the legal function at UC as well as overseeing governance support, internal audit, policy and compliance. Additionally, this role will work closely with staff across UC including the Senior Leadership Team.
