Mō te tūnga | About the role

Reporting to the Chief Legal Advisor, you will contribute directly to the Ministry’s commercial and property work, which includes grant and funding programmes for the development of housing on Crown owned and Māori owned land.  You will also provide operational advice and support to the Ministry’s business units on other matters, including contributing at times to the development of housing and urban development policy and legislation.

The salary range for this role is $117,135 - $143,164 + 3% KiwiSaver contribution.

We are ideally looking for someone with senior level legal expertise in New Zealand commercial and property law who is interested in a wider role that also encompasses operational and public law advice.  A significant part of the Ministry’s work relates to funding housing development on Māori land, so a knowledge of Māori land law would be an advantage. 

In addition, the Ministry is involved in the current resource management reforms, and in submissions on several District Plans, so a working knowledge of resource management law would be an advantage. You will also have the following.

• Proven ability to provide sound advice across all levels of the organisation.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication ability which will allow you to convey key messages and ideas or simplify complex issues suitable to the audience.
• Strong contract drafting skills.
• Ability to coach and mentor others.

You will bring an awareness of Māori values, practice and perspective to your work, and commitment to growing your knowledge of Te Ao Māori, te reo me tikanga, while supporting others to do the same. A knowledge of Māori entities and Māori land law would be an advantage.
